Get startedAmazon FBA Fees Explained (and How to Calculate FBA Profit)
Amazon is the easiest place to reach millions of buyers — and one of the most expensive to sell on once every fee is counted. A product with a healthy margin on your own website can turn thin on Amazon after the referral fee, the FBA fulfilment fee and storage.
Here's what each fee is, how they stack up, and how to work out what you actually keep per unit.

The main FBA fees
Two fees do most of the damage. The referral fee is a percentage of the sale price — around 15% in most categories (verify your category's rate). The FBA fulfilment fee is a flat charge per unit based on size and weight, covering pick, pack and ship. On top sit monthly storage fees (and long-term storage fees for slow movers).
Together, referral + FBA fees commonly take 25–40% of the sale price — before you've paid for the product itself or any ads.
Calculating true FBA profit per unit
Net profit per unit = sale price − product cost − referral fee − FBA fulfilment fee − other costs (storage, returns, ads). Then divide by sale price for your margin.
Example: a $29.99 item costing $6 with a ~$4.50 referral fee and a $5.50 FBA fee nets roughly $13.99 — about a 47% margin before ads and returns. Layer PPC on and it drops further, which is why break-even ACoS matters.
Why your Amazon margin is thinner than your website's
Your own store doesn't charge a 15% referral or an FBA fee, so the same product almost always earns less per unit on Amazon. That's not a reason to avoid Amazon — the volume can more than make up for it — but you must price and advertise with the real Amazon margin in mind, not your website's.
Frequently asked questions
What fees does Amazon charge FBA sellers?
Mainly a referral fee (a percentage of the sale price, ~15% in most categories) and an FBA fulfilment fee (based on size and weight), plus storage fees. Verify current rates in Amazon's fee schedule.
How do I calculate FBA profit?
Subtract product cost, the referral fee, the FBA fulfilment fee and other costs (storage, returns, ads) from the sale price, then divide by the sale price for your margin.
Why is my Amazon margin lower than my website margin?
Amazon's referral and FBA fees typically take 25–40% of the sale price — costs your own store doesn't charge.
