How to Track Your Brand's Visibility in AI Answers (2026)

There is no Search Console for AI answers. No engine publishes how often it named your brand, and the surfaces that do send traffic report it inconsistently. That makes AI visibility feel unmeasurable — but it is not. It is measurable the way brand tracking has always been measured: with a defined panel, run on a schedule, recorded consistently.

This is the method we use ourselves, and it needs nothing more than a spreadsheet and about an hour a month. Written August 2026.

Step 1: build a prompt panel

Write 20 to 50 questions a real buyer would ask an assistant on the way to choosing something like you. Mix the categories deliberately: unbranded discovery ("best dashboard for a small Shopify store"), comparison ("alternatives to X"), qualifying ("cheapest way to see Amazon and Shopify sales together"), and branded ("what is Dash Captain") to check how accurately you are described.

Freeze the wording. The value of the panel is that it is the same every month — you are measuring change, and rewritten prompts destroy the comparison.

Step 2: run it and record five things

Run every prompt against each engine you care about — ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude — in a signed-out or fresh session so personalisation does not colour the result. For each run record: whether you were **mentioned**, whether you were **cited** with a link, **which page** was cited, **which competitors** appeared, and whether the **description of you was accurate**.

That last column is the one teams skip and later regret. An engine confidently describing you as something you are not is a positioning problem you can fix with content, and you will only see it if you write it down.

Step 3: turn it into two numbers

**Presence rate** — the share of panel prompts where you were mentioned at all. This is your headline trend line.

**Share of voice** — your mentions divided by all brand mentions across the panel. This is the competitive number, and it moves when a rival publishes well even if your own presence holds steady.

Both are only meaningful as a series. One month is noise; six months is a trend you can act on.

Step 4: measure the traffic that does arrive

Assistants that link do send referral traffic, and it appears in analytics like any other referrer — look for chatgpt.com, perplexity.ai, gemini.google.com and copilot.microsoft.com in your referral report, and segment it, because its behaviour is usually different: fewer sessions, higher intent, and often a straight run at a pricing or signup page.

Two honest caveats. Referral attribution from assistants is incomplete — some traffic arrives without a usable referrer and lands in direct. And Google's AI Overviews send traffic that is indistinguishable from ordinary organic search in your reports. Referral data is a floor on the true number, never the whole picture.

Step 5: automate the boring half

Keep the panel in a sheet with one row per prompt per month and columns for the five fields above. Charts over that sheet give you the presence and share-of-voice lines without any special tooling.

Automating the *running* of the panel is where teams reach for a paid tracker. Before you buy one, be clear about what it is doing: sending your prompts to the engines on a schedule and parsing the answers. That is genuinely useful at scale, and it is also worth checking each engine's terms on automated querying before you rely on it.

Frequently asked questions

Can Search Console show me AI mentions?

No. Search Console covers Google Search, and AI Overview impressions are folded into ordinary Search performance rather than reported separately. Nothing in it covers ChatGPT, Perplexity or Claude.

How often should I run the panel?

Monthly is the sweet spot for most brands — frequent enough to catch a real move, infrequent enough that the hour it costs stays worth paying. Weekly only makes sense during an active push.

Does Dash Captain track AI visibility?

Not today — we are honest about what our connectors do, and no connector reads AI answers. Dash Captain watches your connected data (sales, ads, traffic, search) and emails you when something changes. The method above is what we use for AI visibility ourselves.
