How it’s calculated

Conversion rate = Orders ÷ Visitors × 100

Revenue per visitor (RPV) = Revenue ÷ Visitors.

Worked example

Visitors
5,000
Orders
120
Avg order value
$48
Result
CVR = 120 ÷ 5,000 = 2.4%

Revenue = 120 × $48 = $5,760, so revenue per visitor is $1.15.

What your result means

Conversion rate tells you how well traffic turns into orders. Around 2–3% is a common e-commerce benchmark, but it swings with category, price point and traffic source — cold paid social converts far below branded search. Revenue per visitor often matters more, because it blends conversion and order value.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing traffic sources — branded and paid traffic convert very differently; segment before judging.
  • Counting sessions vs. users inconsistently between periods.
  • Chasing CVR while ignoring AOV — a higher order value can beat a higher conversion rate on revenue per visitor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a good e-commerce conversion rate?

Roughly 2–3% is typical, but it depends heavily on category, price and traffic mix. Compare against your own trend and by source rather than a single benchmark.

Conversion rate or revenue per visitor — which matters more?

RPV, usually. It captures both how often visitors buy and how much they spend, so it's a truer measure of what traffic is worth.
