AI Overviews are Google's generated answers that sit above the classic results, citing a handful of pages. For informational queries they often resolve the question outright, which changes the value of ranking beneath them.
The important structural fact for anyone planning around them: AI Overviews are built on Google's ordinary index. There is no separate submission, no distinct crawler to allow, and no opt-in. If you rank, you are already a candidate. Written August 2026 and reviewed quarterly.
What they do to your traffic
Expect impressions to hold up better than clicks on informational queries. When the answer is fully contained in the overview, the click was never going to happen — the intent was satisfied. That is a real loss for content whose only job was to answer a definitional question, and much less of a loss for pages tied to an action: buying, calculating, connecting, comparing.
The strategic response is not to abandon informational content — it still earns citations and brand presence — but to make sure a meaningful share of your pages do something a summary cannot: a calculator that takes the reader's own numbers, a template they copy, a tool they use.
Which queries trigger them
Overviews skew toward explanatory and comparative questions — "what is", "how do I", "which is better" — and appear less often on transactional queries where Google prefers shopping and ad surfaces. Coverage moves constantly, so treat any list of triggering query types as a snapshot rather than a rule.
For a seller this means your metric explainers and how-to content are the most exposed, and your product, category and comparison pages the least.
How to earn the citation
The citations shown are usually pages that already rank well for the query, so ordinary SEO remains the foundation. On top of that, the pattern that wins is a page containing a crisply extractable version of the exact sub-answer the overview needs: a definition, a formula, a step list, a table.
Structured data helps machines identify those blocks — FAQPage for question-and-answer sections, HowTo for processes, Product where relevant. It does not manufacture authority, but it removes ambiguity about what your page is asserting.
What your analytics will and will not tell you
Search Console does not break out AI Overview impressions and clicks as a separate surface — they are folded into your ordinary Search performance. That means you cannot directly measure "how often was I cited in an overview" from your own data.
What you can watch: a widening gap between impressions and clicks on informational queries, position holding while CTR falls, and the query-level detail in Search Console for the terms most likely to trigger an overview. Treat those as indicators, not proof — and pair them with a manual prompt panel if the answer matters to your planning.
Frequently asked questions
Can I opt out of AI Overviews?
Not selectively while staying in Google's results. The nosnippet family of tags limits how your content can be shown, but they also restrict ordinary snippets — a heavy price for most sites. Google-Extended governs Gemini training, not AI Overviews.
Do AI Overviews use a different crawler?
No. They are generated over Google's normal index, so your existing Googlebot access and rankings are what put you in the running.
Is it worth optimising for a surface I cannot measure?
Optimise for the underlying behaviour rather than the surface: clear answers, extractable structure, and pages that do something a summary cannot. Those pay off in ordinary search too, so the work is not stranded if the surface changes.
